Gifton's parents divorced and both abandoned their only child. He lived alone until his grandmother realized what had happened and took him into her own home. Now Gifton lives under the custody of his grandmother, although she is aging and in poor health. She has no job or income at all. They rely on well-wishers for any food or clothing they get. Gifton is not able to afford the cost of school tuition or a uniform.
