Sangai is a bright young lady. Her mother has died and her father abandoned the family. Sangai had nowhere to go, so she went to live with a foster family. They are impoverished and earn almost no income, relying on day-to-day contract labor in the slums. Sangai is malnourished and frequently contracts malaria with no medical care.
